Surah Al-Muzzammil, otherwise known as Surah Muzammil, was revealed in Makkah and was the 123rd surah of the Qur’an to be revealed to Prophet Muhammad. It is often considered one of the most spiritual surahs of the Quran with its many references to God, the Prophet Muhammad, and a surah that calls people to the spiritual journey (maqamat suluk). If you haven’t read it yet, now’s your chance
There are many paths to spirituality and connecting with the Divine. Muslims can find Islam by way of prayer, reading about Islam in the Quran, or interacting with Muslim people. The same is true for those who would not call themselves Muslim. Though one way does not work better than another for everyone, the path chosen may have different levels and corresponding obstacles.
For those who have found their connection to God through surah muzammil , this pathway might not come from traditional sources like through family and friends or studying other religions (in fact it might be contrary to tradition), but rather via reading a book or experiencing a revelation.
It might also mean a person living as an atheist has had an awakening. When this happens, it is important to take time before making any drastic decisions because there will be struggles and temptations along the spiritual journey. Prayer becomes important here, as well as the guidance of trusted friends, teachers, and mentors along with inspiration from poetry and literature.
One possible obstacle on this journey may include loss of faith when faced with so much suffering; however, help can be found if one remembers that there are two worlds – Dunya worldly life where all things happen according to fate; and Alam al jinni the afterlife which is eternal blissful peace – so patience will lead them to peace at some point.
A second obstacle could be guilt over wrongdoings committed in the past, which is eased with the remembrance of Allah’s mercy, forgiveness, and compassion. A third challenge could be doubts about religious authenticity or whether they should continue following this spiritual journey.
These doubts can only be resolved by persevering until they either go away or clarity emerges after more reflection on the text read or experience received. They can also turn to others for answers and consult religious authorities. Whatever the outcome is, following through takes courage since without knowing what lies ahead they must commit themselves wholeheartedly to the process
Suluk: A Reference to the Maqamat
Suluk is a reference to the maqamat. Suluk is best explained through the surah al muzammil full, the surah al muzammil pdf, and these various other factors. Along with Suluk, Quranic references, there are also various views from Islamic scholars which can help you better understand it.
It has often been debated among scholars whether or not the word suluk should be taken as a direct reference to those who are on their spiritual journey in this sura. As mentioned before, Surah Al Muzzammil is known for its description of different states.
It begins by telling us about those who fold their arms across themselves (1) and ends by mentioning people who fast during the day (28). Continuation (six+ sentences using the words: surah al muzammil full, surah al muzammil pdf): The use of both phrases in tandem points to them being used interchangeably with each other.
They both refer to those traversing this path at all stages along the way. Those in contemplation might have already achieved some level of understanding but they continue to contemplate it. Continuation (six+ sentences using the words: surah al muzammil full, surah al muzammil pdf):
There are those at another level where they might find themselves distracted from that contemplation because they get caught up in worldly pleasures or cares. Continuation (six+ sentences using the words: surah al muzammil full, surah al muzammil pdf): Finally there are those who do not get distracted and so stay on course towards their goal.
It seems like an indirect reference since alsakhsakh means to traverse but could also refer to going up to a higher station by climbing steps rather than traveling long distances Continuation (six+ sentences using the words: surah muzammil full, surah muzammil pdf): Reference to traveling long distances would be improper since these people have already embarked upon travel within themselves
Continuation (six+ sentences using the words: surah muzammil full, surah muzammil pdf): But it’s more likely that the phrase is meant to point out those traveling the physical world
The Various States and Stations /
The maqamat suluk is a spiritual journey along the path that has stages, or stations. In surah muzammil alone there are many words that represent these stations. One word is Islam which means submission to God. Another word is Ihsan which means excellence in all aspects of life.
The station between submission to God and excellence in all aspects of life is hudan which means mercy on oneself and others. Mercy entails kindness and compassion, not just for one’s own self but also for those around them, both friends and enemies, the lowly as well as the great ones.
It entails tolerating evil while striving against it; bearing hardships without complaint; fulfilling obligations without hesitating; speaking the truth without fear or favor; living frugally without showing off; and remembering death while waiting patiently for its inevitable arrival.
All this is part of seeking what is beautiful for oneself, something which leads to peace of mind. When someone does this sincerely, then they will have attained hidaya or guidance from Allah (SWT). They will find themselves submitting to Him at every moment and rejoicing in His bounties and mercies with their whole heart, soul, power and intelligence.
They will be doing things from the heart because they realize how close they are to Him at all times. They become humble before Him knowing that everything comes from Him and praising Him with their whole being because He deserves nothing less than total devotion.
They experience himma or ardor – an intensity of love so strong that it cannot be quenched by any earthly object – towards Allah (SWT) until everything else becomes insignificant.
